RESPONSIBLY MAKING CLOTHES.
Here at KATHARINA LOU minimising my environmental impact is at the forefront of every design and production decision.. The fashion industry has become one of the biggest contributors to mass waste and land fill and I am so passionate about slowing down the industries damaging fast pace and to be apart of the SLOW FASHION movement.
The studio I work with to create my handprinted materials is women owned and operated. Located in Bangalore, India this studio have been operating as a family run business since 1977, meaning some of the artisans have been printing for over 50 years. I have personally visited the studio and met the artisans in 2019 and first hand seen how they work towards ethically and responsibility creating and carrying on the beautiful craftsmanship of hand wood block printing.
All workers are paid fair wages, have private medical insurance, are offered pandemic support and paid leave.
They also offer free community outreach programs to vocationally train specially-abled artisans.
They only use organic GOTS certified dyes & make sure to gauge each project precisely and only prepare the correct amount of dyes, if any dyes are left over they donate it to their local autism centres that they support for their craft projects.
They are the first artisan studio in India with ISO 26000 Certification.
They donate all extra fabric offcuts to local NGOs, that repurpose them into creative, utility items.
The studio also reduces its dependance on fossil fuels by using solar power and LPG sources. As well as locally sourcing items to reduce their carbon footprint.
All items at Katharina Lou are hand made-to-order, meaning I will cut and sew each piece only once an order comes through. This not only reduces my textile waste but also means no garments are left unloved at the end of a season.
This also limits how many items I can create per week, keeping my production small scale & making your piece even more special! Each piece is sewn one by one, so you can trust it’s made with lots of love&care and to last a lifetime.
